Top 5 mistakes when buying a cheap dining table and how to avoid them

A cheap dining table often looks appealing, but it hides pitfalls that only become apparent after a few months. In this article, we will look at the five most common mistakes people make and show you how to avoid them with honest solid wood from our Beskydy workshop.

Why you should think twice about cheap tables

When looking for a dining table, the first thing that often catches the eye is the price. A cheap table from a retail chain or a mass-production e-shop looks nice at first glance. But after a few months, creaking, scratches, peeling surfaces, or even warped tabletops begin to appear. In our small workshop in the heart of the Beskydy Mountains, we see this often – people come to us precisely because they no longer want to deal with replacing another table every two or three years.

A solid oak or ash table is not just a piece of furniture. It is a place where family gathers, where celebrations, work, and relaxation take place. And that is why it deserves honest craftsmanship, not shortcuts.

Mistake No. 1: Opting for veneer instead of solid wood

The most common trap. Many "wooden" tables have only a thin veneer glued to particleboard or MDF. On the surface, it looks like wood, but underneath is something entirely different. Once the veneer is damaged, repair is practically impossible. And moisture, temperature fluctuations, or just everyday use will reveal it over time.

In our workshop, we work exclusively with 100% solid wood – oak and ash. No veneer, no laminate. Each plank carries its own grain, annual rings, and character. That is a difference you will notice immediately upon touch and after years of use.

Mistake No. 2: Underestimating the surface finish

Cheap tables often receive a quick varnish or a thin layer that quickly wears off or starts to yellow. The natural oil we use penetrates the wood, protects it, and allows it to breathe. A surface treated with OSMO oil can withstand everyday life – coffee, wine, and children's drawing – and if needed, it can be easily renewed.

Mistake No. 3: Poorly chosen dimensions

Many people buy a table "by eye" or based on a photo in an interior that looks larger than it is. Then they find that there is not enough room to comfortably move around it, or that it is too small for the family. We always recommend allowing sufficient space for chairs and movement. The standard height of a dining table is 78 cm, and the length is chosen according to the number of people and the size of the room.

In our workshop, we make custom tables – from 120 cm up to longer variants. You can choose exactly what fits your home.

Mistake No. 4: Ignoring stability and joints

Cheap tables often stand on thin legs or have joints that loosen over time. Creaking, wobbling, and warped tabletops are then commonplace. In our workshop, we use traditional joinery and sturdy metal bases that keep the entire structure stable even under daily load.

Mistake No. 5: Forgetting about long-term care and story

A cheap table is thrown away after a few years. A solid table from the Beskydy Mountains ages with you, beautifully, and can serve generations. If you care for it simply – by wiping with a soft cloth and occasional oil renewal – it will last for decades. And most importantly: each piece carries the story of wood that grew slowly in the harsh Beskydy climate.

How to avoid these mistakes

Before you buy another table, ask yourself a few questions: Is it really solid wood? How is the surface treated? Can the table be customized? And most importantly – will it be a place that brings people together, or just another piece you will soon replace?

At Stolařství Mikel, we make tables by hand, with a personal approach and respect for the material. No factory, no shortcuts. Just the honest work of Petr and a small workshop in Hutisko-Solanec.
