How to choose the size of a dining table

Choosing the right size dining table is one of the most important decisions when furnishing a dining room or kitchen. The table should be large enough to comfortably seat all household members and any guests, but at the same time, it should not appear too bulky in the interior.

How much space does one person need?

Generally, 60 cm of table length per person is recommended. This dimension ensures that everyone has enough space for a plate, cutlery, and a glass without people feeling cramped at the table.

Recommended sizes by number of people

Number of people Recommended table length Recommended width Suitable use
2 people 100 – 120 cm 80 – 90 cm Small apartments, breakfast nooks
4 people 120 – 140 cm 80 – 90 cm Most common choice for families
6 people 160 – 180 cm 90 cm Family dining + occasional guests
8 people 200 – 220 cm 90 – 100 cm Larger dining rooms, frequent visits
10+ people 240 cm and up 90 – 100 cm Large families, social areas

What to consider when choosing

  • Space around the table – ideally leave at least 70–80 cm of free space around the table for chairs to be comfortably pulled out.
  • Table width – 80 cm is the minimum, 90 cm is more comfortable and practical for larger plates and serving.
  • Table shape – rectangular tables are most practical for more people. Round and square tables are better suited for smaller spaces or for 2–4 people.
  • Future needs – if you plan more frequent visits or family expansion, consider a slightly larger size.

The correctly chosen table size significantly affects how pleasant daily dining and shared moments with family and friends will be.
