How to choose a wooden dining table?

A wooden dining table is the heart of the home. In this guide, you will learn how to choose the right one made of oak or ash, what length and width to choose, what edge shape will suit your interior, and why a height of 78 cm works best. No compromises, just honest wood that will last for generations.

Wooden dining table – why oak or ash

Oak is as hard as stone, has a distinctive grain pattern and knots that beautifully darken over time into a darker patina. It is a material that will withstand children's scratches, hot pots, and decades of use. Ash, on the other hand, is lighter, has a finer structure, and appears fresher and airier. We treat both types of wood with natural oils, so the surface remains pleasant to the touch, the wood can breathe, and after years it can be easily re-oiled to look like new again.

Dining table height – 78 cm is the ideal standard

This height is chosen to fit standard dining chairs with a seat height of 45-48 cm. Your elbows are in a natural position, so you don't have to hunch over or reach. You sit comfortably even during long dinners or when children are doing homework at the table. We only make taller or shorter variants exceptionally, if you have specific chairs or want something unconventional.

Dining table shape – always rectangular

A rectangle is the most natural shape for dining. People sit opposite each other, make eye contact, and can easily pass dishes and plates. We do not make round or oval dining tables because for classic family dining, the rectangle works best and most comfortably.

Dining table dimensions – how to choose the right size

Length from 120 cm for a family of four or a smaller kitchen, up to 300 cm for a large dining room where the whole family and friends gather. A width of 80 cm is sufficient for comfortable dining, plates, and glasses. A width of 90 cm provides more space in the middle of the table for bowls, candles, or flowers. When choosing, always allow at least 60 to 80 cm of clear space around the table for comfortable getting up and access from all sides.

Dining table edge types – natural, beveled, or straight

A natural edge preserves the original outline of the tree, so the table retains irregularities, knots, and its natural shape. It looks the most rustic and authentic. A beveled edge has a slight chamfer of about 45 degrees, the corners are more pleasant to the touch, less likely to catch on sleeves, and look more modern. A straight edge is clean, precise, ideal for minimalist or contemporary interiors where you want perfectly straight lines.

How to choose a dining table for your home

For a small apartment or kitchen, choose a length of 120 to 160 cm, a width of 80 cm, and light ash or oak so that the space is not visually reduced. For a large dining room or an open living room with a dining area, go for 200 to 300 cm and a width of 90 cm; oak with a distinctive grain will look dominant and beautiful. A rustic cottage or country house calls for a natural edge and darker oak. A modern apartment or loft is best complemented by a straight or beveled edge with light ash.
