How to choose the right solid wood board and what it's suitable for

Solid wood slabs are becoming increasingly popular not only for dining tables, but also for kitchen islands, countertops, benches, shelves, or entire custom-made furniture pieces. If you want to have your own table, bench, or other piece of furniture made, choosing the right slab is crucial. A poorly chosen slab can warp, crack, or wear out quickly.

What is a real solid wood slab

The difference between solid wood and other materials

A real solid wood slab is made from whole pieces of wood (either from a single piece or glued from multiple planks of the same wood species). It is not veneer on chipboard or a laminated board. This gives it a natural grain, it can be repeatedly sanded and renovated, and its lifespan is measured in decades.

You will most often encounter two types:

• Glued plank slab – a more stable and cheaper option, ideal for most tables and furniture.
• Single slab – more distinctive character, higher price, suitable for designer pieces.

How to choose the right solid wood slab

1. Wood species selection – oak or ash

Oak is harder, more stable, and more resistant to mechanical damage. It has a more pronounced grain and a warmer tone. It is suitable wherever the slab will be heavily loaded (dining tables, kitchen islands, countertops).

Ash is slightly lighter, brighter, and more modern. It has beautiful long lines and a more airy feel. It is excellent for bright interiors, coffee tables, or where you want a less "heavy" look.

2. Slab thickness

• 30–35 mm – suitable for lighter coffee tables or shelves
• 38–45 mm – the most common choice for dining tables (optimal strength-to-weight ratio)
• 50 mm and more – for massive designer tables, islands, or slabs with a distinctive live edge

The thicker the slab, the more stable and luxurious it appears, but it is also heavier and more expensive.

3. Wood quality and drying

The most important thing is that the wood is properly dried (ideally to 8–12% moisture content). A poorly dried slab can later warp or crack. Also pay attention to how the planks are arranged and whether the slab has too many large knots or cracks in critical areas.

4. Surface treatment

For tabletops and slabs that will frequently come into contact with food or water, we recommend natural oil (e.g., OSMO). Oil penetrates the wood, allows it to breathe, and is easy to renew. Lacquer creates a harder surface, but it is more difficult to repair if damaged.

5. Edge type

• Straight edge – clean and practical appearance
• Rounded or beveled edge – more pleasant to the touch
• Live edge – maximum authenticity and design effect

What solid wood slabs are suitable for

Dining and work tables

The most common use. A solid slab 38–45 mm thick combined with a quality base will create a table that will last for generations.

Kitchen islands and countertops

Oak is an ideal choice due to its hardness and durability. With proper surface treatment, it can handle daily cooking and frequent cleaning.

Coffee tables and benches

Smaller ash or oak slabs are excellent for coffee tables, hallway benches, or benches for dining tables.

Shelves, consoles, and custom furniture

A solid slab can be used as a shelf, console, wardrobe top, vanity top, or as a base for entire furniture pieces.

Designer and atypical projects

Single slabs with a live edge are often used as a distinctive design element – for example, as a bar counter, conference desk, or studio table.

What to watch out for when buying

• Always ask about the origin of the wood and the drying method.
• Check that the slab is indeed solid wood and not just veneer.
• Consider how the slab will be attached (base, legs, metal structures).
• Be aware that solid wood "works" – it needs proper climatic conditions (ideally 40–60% air humidity).
