How to care for a solid wood table: oak, ash, and other wood will last beautifully for decades

A solid oak or ash table is more than just furniture. It's a piece that smells of home, has visible grain, and a story. To look great even after years of dinners, celebrations, and children's adventures, it needs simple but regular care. It's not rocket science; just a few principles and the right products.

Why solid wood needs care

Oak and ash are among the hardest woods, but they are porous. Without protection, they would absorb stains, water, or dry out and crack. We most often use oil because it allows the wood to breathe, emphasizes the grain, and is easy to renew. This is why our tables age gracefully.

Everyday cleaning

Wipe dust with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. Wipe up spilled drinks (coffee, wine, juice) immediately, ideally within a minute. No aggressive sprays, window cleaners, or abrasive sponges. These will damage the surface. Always use coasters for hot mugs and plates.

Regular surface renewal

An oiled table needs renewal: once a year or when the table starts to look dry and dull.

Procedure for proper treatment: Lightly sand with fine sandpaper, wipe off dust, apply a thin layer of natural furniture oil (Osmo or similar). Then let the oil dry for 24 hours without use.

What to do about stains and scratches

To clean a white ring from a mug, mix oil with a little vinegar (2:1) and gently wipe. Lightly sand small scratches and oil them. For deeper damage, write to us; we can handle the renovation.

Stable room conditions

Humidity 40 to 60 percent, temperature 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. In winter, a humidifier helps; in summer, avoid direct sun (wood darkens unevenly). Do not leave the table near heating or a fireplace.
