How to find the best carpenter for your custom projects

Getting custom-made furniture is one of the best decisions you can make for your home. Whether you're looking for a proper dining table that fits perfectly into your kitchen, an original coffee table for your living room, or some special solid wood piece, one thing always matters most: the person who makes it. But how do you recognize a truly good carpenter and avoid disappointment?
Having custom-made furniture is an excellent choice for your home. Whether you want a dining table that perfectly fits your kitchen, an original coffee table for your living room, or a special solid wood piece, the most important factor is always the person who makes it. How do you recognize a good carpenter and avoid disappointment?

Start with references and real experiences

The best recommendation is the work a carpenter has already done for others. Ask friends, family, or neighbors if they have any tips. If no one can help, check reviews on Google, Facebook, Instagram, or Firmy.cz. Be wary of reviews that are too similar or all appear at once within a single month.

Good carpenters usually display a gallery of their completed projects. It's not just about nice photos from a phone, but also about the details – joints, surface finish, hardware, and how the wood looks over time. If someone hides their portfolio or only sends it upon request, it's usually not a good sign.

See what and how they work with

A quality custom carpenter never skimps on materials. Solid oak, ash, walnut, or beech should be a given. Ask directly what wood they use, where they source it, how they dry it, and what surface finish they choose – for example, oil, wax, or hard lacquer. If you hear "cheap laminate" or "something from a hobby market," it's best to keep looking.

Craftsmanship is also important. Look for hand-finished details, quality gluing, strong joints like dovetail or dowel, and hardware from reputable brands such as Blum or Häfele. Modern CNC milling machines are an advantage, provided the carpenter finishes the work by hand.

Communication and customer approach are crucial

A good carpenter will truly listen to you. You won't have to repeat that you want a table without a central leg for chairs, or that you need a specific height. At the first meeting, ask about the measurement process, how many times you'll meet, how they handle changes during production, what the deadlines are, and what happens if something doesn't go as planned. A finished table in two weeks at half the price of competitors usually ends badly. Realistic deadlines for a proper solid wood dining table are 3 to 4 weeks, sometimes longer.

Price vs. value: don't just look for the cheapest

The cheapest offer is rarely the best. A quality custom table costs more than one from a big box store, but it will last thirty to fifty years instead of five to ten. A good carpenter will offer various materials and finishes, show samples, and explain why one option costs fifteen thousand more.

Compare offers from three to four carpenters. Pay attention not only to the price but also to what is included – for example, delivery, assembly, oil treatment, or warranty.

Visit the workshop

If possible, visit the workshop directly. You'll see if it's tidy, if the machines are well-maintained, and if real work is being done there. Many good carpenters will gladly invite you – it's a good sign that they are proud of their work.
