How to read tree rings and why every solid wood table from Beskydy Mountains tells a different story

In our workshop in Hutisko-Solanec, below Soláň, every day we encounter wood that has its own history. It's not a board from a catalog. It's a piece of a tree that grew slowly in the higher altitudes of the Beskids, where winter lasts longer and summer is shorter. This is precisely why the annual rings are denser and the wood is stronger. When you visit us, or browse our tables online, you often ask about the grain. What annual rings actually are

An annual ring is one year's growth layer of wood. In our conditions, a new one forms each year. Springwood is lighter and softer, summerwood is darker and denser. In oak and ash from the Beskids, these rings are clearly visible. They are not defects. They are imprints of time.

A tree that grew higher has narrower annual rings. This means slower growth, greater density, and longer lifespan. Precisely such wood is what we choose for our dining tables. It's not a marketing phrase. It's a practical reason why a table created by us will withstand daily use and remain beautiful for decades.

Why grain matters for a dining table

A dining table is not just a surface for plates. It's a place where family gathers, where birthdays are celebrated, and where people simply sit in silence. When a tabletop has a vibrant grain, it becomes a focal point. People touch it, observe it, and talk about it.

Oak usually has a more distinctive grain, with deeper tones and characteristic knots. Ash is lighter, with finer transitions that appear more modern and airy. We treat both types with natural oil, which doesn't cover the grain but enhances it. The oil penetrates the wood, allows it to breathe, and protects the surface from everyday wear and tear.

In 2026, interiors are increasingly returning to authenticity. Visible wood structure, natural edges, and natural variations in grain are no longer something to be masked. They are elements that calm the interior and connect it with nature. Our tables fit naturally into this trend – because we never do anything else.

How annual rings affect table selection

When ordering a table from us, you can choose between a straight, beveled, or live edge. The live edge preserves the original shape of the trunk. The annual rings then continue to the edge, and the table looks as if it just came from the forest. A straight or beveled edge is calmer and suitable for cleaner, more minimalist spaces.

You choose the dimensions according to your needs – from smaller tables for four people to large family slabs. The thickness of the tabletop is around 3.8 cm. The base is metal, usually black, which doesn't detract from the wood but gives it stability and a contemporary look.

Each piece is an original. The photos on the e-shop are illustrative. The actual tabletop will have its own grain, its knots, and its transitions. In the workshop, we see this as an advantage. It's not a flaw. It's a story.

What annual rings reveal about durability

Denser annual rings mean higher strength. Wood from the higher altitudes of the Beskids is less prone to deformation and better withstands changes in indoor humidity. When the table is properly treated with natural oil and you give it basic care (a soft damp cloth, occasional re-oiling), it remains beautiful for generations.

Practical tips on working with grain

If you have a bright interior, ash with a finer grain will brighten the space. For more rustic or industrial spaces, oak with more prominent annual rings is more suitable. The metal base perfectly complements both options – the wood remains warm and human, the metal adds clean lines.
