Oak or ash? How to choose solid wood for a dining table
In our workshop in Solanec pod Soláněm, we often hear the same question: "Oak or ash?" It's not just a technical choice. It's a decision about what story the table will tell in your dining room for decades to come.
We source both types of wood from the higher altitudes of the Beskids. They grow slower, are denser and stronger. No veneer, no shortcuts – just honest solid wood. Yet, each has its own personality.
Oak – strength, warmth, and distinctive grain
Oak is a classic in our region. It has a more pronounced grain, warm honey to amber tones, and natural durability appreciated by families with children and for everyday dining.

When we examine an oak slab in the workshop, we see knots, color transitions, and annual rings that have formed over decades. Each piece is unique. After treatment with natural OSMO oil, the surface gains depth and a pleasant warmth to the touch.
Oak is perfect for interiors where you want a sense of stability and warmth – rustic cottages, modern homes with wooden elements, and industrial spaces where solid wood balances metal and concrete. It is a wood that ages gracefully and gains character over the years.
Ash – lightness, airiness, and modern purity
Ash is lighter, with a delicate but very distinctive grain pattern. It has a whitish to creamy hue and appears airier. In the workshop, we like it for those looking for a lighter, calmer, and more contemporary look.

Like oak, we treat ash with natural OSMO oil. The surface remains pleasant to the touch, resistant to everyday dining, and easy to maintain. Ash blends beautifully with Scandinavian style, minimalist interiors, and bright rooms where you want the table to visually enlarge and brighten the space.
What they have in common
Both wood types: - are 100% solid wood from the higher altitudes of the Beskids, - we handcraft tables from them, from selecting the slab to final oiling, - offer the option of straight, beveled, or natural edges, - can be customized to your exact dimensions and style, - age beautifully and, with care, will last for generations.
The difference is not in quality, but in the mood the table brings to the room.
How to decide practically
Ask yourself three simple questions:
1. What is the tone of your interior? Warm wood, darker floors, brick → oak. Light walls, minimalism, Scandinavian style → ash.
2. How much light do you have in the dining room? Less light → ash brightens the space. Plenty of light and you want depth → oak.
3. What feeling do you want at the table? Strong, stable, "anchored" → oak. Light, calm, unpretentious → ash.
In our workshop, we will be happy to show you samples of both types of wood. You can touch them, compare their grain, and decide at your leisure. It's not about which wood is "better." It's about which one suits you and your home.
If you are unsure, write or call us. We will agree on the exact dimensions, edge type, and oil shade. The table is custom-made, and production typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.
A solid oak or ash table is not just a piece of furniture. It is a place where family gathers, where daily rituals and great conversations happen. And that's why it deserves wood that has a story and will age with you.
